Location Description
Pietra Ligure
The area of naturalistic interest in the Loano region comprises the territories inland of Pietra Ligure, Loano and Borghetto S. Spirito, spanning the ridge between the Colle Scravaion and the Colle del Melogno. It contains large numbers of interesting animal and plant communities and some remarkable karst phenomena. In particular, the group includes Rocca Barbena, the upper Val Varatello, Monte Carmo di Loano, Ciazze Secche, the Maremola stream and Monte Grosso. The imposing dolomitic mass of the Rocca Barbena, coeval with the better-known Dolomites, offers a scene of harsh beauty, with steep walls on which only a specialized and very rare flora is able to survive, while the surrounding pastures provide a hunting ground for buzzards. On the other side of the pass we find the sources of the Bormida River, in a cooler and more heavily wooded setting.
Monte Carmo di Loano (1388 m or 4554 ft) offers one of the finest panoramas in the whole of the Savonese region and is also one of the halting places on the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri. The landscape is made up of a continuous alternation of environments typical of the Po Valley with more arid ones, and it is no accident that many people regard this zone as the borderline between the botanical regions of the Alps and the Appennines. A number of typical mountain plants, such as the cowberry and dwarf juniper and the presence of animals like the black grouse and several rare species of butterfly confirm the area’s role as a divide, as well as its great interest to naturalists and tourists.
